USA INDICTS SINALOA GOVERNOR OVER ALLEGED CARTEL LINKS

The Department of Justice of the United States of America (hereinafter: USA) unsealed an indictment on 29 April 2026 charging the Governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, and nine other current and former Mexican officials with drug trafficking and weapons offences. Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York allege that the defendants utilised their official positions to protect the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel in exchange for bribes and political support. The charges follow an intensified anti- corruption campaign by the government of the USA, which has designated the cartel as a foreign terrorist organisation.

Allegations Of Institutional Corruption In Sinaloa

The 34-page indictment alleges that Governor Rubén Rocha Moya conspired with the “Chapitos” faction of the Sinaloa Cartel to secure his election in 2021. According to USA prosecutors, the cartel kidnapped and intimidated political rivals of Rocha Moya to ensure his victory. In exchange, the Governor reportedly allowed the criminal organisation to exercise “near total control” over state and local law enforcement agencies, enabling a “pipeline of deadly drugs” into the USA.

The charges extend beyond the Governor to include a sitting senator from the ruling Morena party, the mayor of the state capital, Culiacán, and various high-level police commanders. One defendant, a former municipal police commander, is also charged with kidnapping resulting in the death of a source for the Drug Enforcement Administration (hereinafter: DEA). An Attorney stated that the Sinaloa Cartel could not operate with such impunity without the cooperation of “corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials” on their payroll.

Response From The Mexican Government

Governor Rubén Rocha Moya has categorically and absolutely rejected the charges, describing them as a strategy to violate the constitutional order and national sovereignty of the Mexican nation. While President Claudia Sheinbaum has not issued a formal reaction to the specific indictments, her government has previously pushed back against law enforcement activity within Mexico. The Mexican Foreign Ministry confirmed that it has received multiple extradition requests related to the case and is currently reviewing them.
